I’ve known Nik since the early 2010s, and over that time he’s become one of my closest friends and most trusted business confidants. In 2017, we co-founded Spencer & Scott - a boutique hypercar business - and I’ve seen first-hand his commercial instinct, strategic clarity, and relentless drive to create value. I first connected with Nik around 2008–2009 when I was establishing Smart Solutions. My father, who had known Nik since his Biffa days, suggested I reach out for some guidance. Nik didn’t just offer advice — he gave us our first major contract through Pure Recycling, which provided a crucial foundation for our early growth. Someone believed in us, and that someone was so well respected I knew we had lift off.
From day one, Nik’s strategic insight, clarity, and belief in our model gave me the confidence to scale Smart Solutions beyond what I had imagined possible at the time.
Working for and alongside Nik at Pure Recycling was a fantastic education for me. It was his relentless drive, passion for a project, eye for detail and ability to take teams with him that just shone through in his businesses. He was truly an inspiration and mentor that was there for me just at that moment when I needed it. I was scaling and at times felt like I was holding on for dear life! Nik was calm, reassuring and always gave me time despite his busy schedule, that time was invaluable for me and I’ll always be grateful for it.
While I later invited him to take on the role of Chairman, his commitments to HERU meant he wasn’t able to accept — but his informal guidance and support never stopped.
Over the years, we’ve become close friends, and I’ve seen firsthand the depth of experience, integrity, and generosity Nik brings to everything he does. He has a rare ability to think long-term, act decisively, and support those around him without ever needing the spotlight. One of a kind!
The coronavirus pandemic was one of the most significant challenges of our time, and it had a profound impact throughout the globe. The corporation I worked for closed down my division, leaving me to navigate an uncertain future during an already turbulent period. Determined to take control of my destiny, I decided to start my own business—something I had very little experience with.
It was at this pivotal moment that I turned to Nik for advice, and that decision proved to be a turning point. Last year Nik kindly agreed to speak at our annual leadership forum.
