Market Position & Brand Strength: known for something

If a customer could swap you for a competitor tomorrow and barely notice, a buyer will notice. This pillar is about your reputation, your visibility and what sets you apart in your market, and whether all three belong to the business rather than to you.

Why this pillar moves value

Distinctiveness is part of what a buyer pays for

A business that competes only on price is easy to copy and hard to value. Its margins belong to the market rather than to the business, and any buyer can see that the next competitor could squeeze them.

A strong position shows up in the numbers: prices that hold, customers who stay, work won without a tender. A strong brand adds visibility and trust, so the right customers find you and believe you before they call. The Radar measures the journey from weak brand, through recognised niche, to market leader.

The final test is durability. If your reputation is your own name, it may leave when you do. If it lives in the brand, the proposition, the know-how and the way the business shows up online and in person, it can be handed on, and that is what a buyer is really acquiring.

The replacement test

  • Liked, but copyableClear appeal that a rival could imitate.
  • Distinct and defensibleWhere a buyer wants you to be.
  • Competing on priceAny capable rival would do.
  • Sticky, but unexplainedCustomers stay, and no one is sure why.
Ask it of your own business: if your best customer had to replace you tomorrow, how hard would it be, and could they say what they would lose?

The buyer’s lens

What buyers test in your position

Position and brand are harder to measure than revenue, so buyers look for evidence. These are the places they usually find it.

  1. How you differ

Who you compete with, and what customers would lose by switching.

  2. How defensible it is

Know-how, relationships, accreditations or intellectual property a rival would take time to match.

  3. Brand recognition

How well known the business is in its market, and whether its story is clear and memorable.

  4. Presence

Whether a prospective buyer can find the business online, and trust what they see.

  5. Where the reputation lives

In the brand and the team, or in the founder’s name and network.

  6. The market itself

Whether your niche is growing or shrinking, and what outside forces, such as technology or regulation, could change it.

Warning signs

When a position is weaker than it looks

Differentiation fades quietly. These are the signs that it has become less of an asset than it should be.

Take the self-check

  • You win most work on price, or by tender against similar firms.

  • A competitor could put their logo on your website and it would still read true.

  • Your brand looks different on every platform where it appears.

  • A buyer searching for the business online would find little to reassure them.

  • Your reputation is mostly your own name.

What good looks like

Customers can say why they chose you, and your team says the same thing. The brand is consistent wherever it appears and easy to find and trust online. Prices hold because the value is clear, much of your work arrives through referral or reputation, and that reputation belongs to the business.
