SCALE2SELL® · Pillar 02 of 08

# Business Strategy: *a documented plan for growth*

A strategy is only useful if it is written down, rests on evidence and helps you decide what not to do. This pillar turns ambition into a plan for growth and market position that your team can follow and a buyer can believe.

Why this pillar moves value

## A plan a buyer *can believe in*

Buyers pay for the future, and a business’s future is only as convincing as the plan behind it. A documented strategy, with clear objectives and the evidence for them, shows that growth is intended and managed rather than accidental. It also gives a buyer something to test: what you planned last year, and whether it happened.

Many founder-led businesses have a strategy of sorts, but it lives in the founder’s head and shifts with the opportunity of the moment. The Radar marks the difference between ad-hoc goals, a documented plan, and a strategy that is built into how the business runs and steered by data.

Good strategy is as much about focus as ambition. Choosing a few objectives, saying why they matter and dropping the rest is what lets a team move together. It is also what makes growth repeatable, and repeatable growth is the kind a buyer values.

From SWOT to strategic focus

The closing step of Toolkit 2

- **Strengths**What you do better than the alternatives, and can prove.
- **Weaknesses**Where you are exposed, stretched or reliant on too few people.
- **Opportunities**Openings in your market you are well placed to take.
- **Threats**Changes, rivals or dependencies that could erode your position.

Based on this, our top four strategic focus areas should be:

A SWOT is only useful if it ends in a choice: the few areas the business will focus on, and by implication the ones it will not.

The buyer’s lens

## How buyers test *a strategy*

A buyer’s advisers will read your plan against your results. These are the questions they tend to ask.

1.

### Is it written down?

A current plan with objectives, owners and timescales, not only intentions.

2.

### Has it worked before?

Whether previous plans were delivered, and what happened when they were not.

3.

### Where will growth come from?

The markets, customers and offers the plan relies on, and the evidence for each.

4.

### How is the business positioned?

Who you serve, who you compete with and why customers choose you.

5.

### Is it focused?

A few priorities, clearly ranked, rather than a long list of hopes.

6.

### Does it fit the numbers?

Forecasts, budgets and resources that match what the strategy says.

Warning signs

## Signs the strategy is *still in your head*

Strategy is often the first thing to slip when a business is busy. These signs suggest it has become more reaction than plan.

Take the self-check

-

There is no written plan, or no one has opened it since it was written.

-

Every opportunity gets a yes, so little gets finished.

-

Your team could not name the three things that matter most this year.

-

Growth targets are set without a view of where the growth will come from.

-

You rarely compare what was planned with what happened.

What good looks like

The business has a written mission and vision and a short, ranked list of objectives for the next twelve months, each with an owner. The plan rests on evidence about your market and your position in it, is reviewed against results, and shapes what the business says no to.

How we work on it with you

## Turning ambition *into a plan*

We do not write your strategy for you. We help you build one you own: focused, evidenced and simple enough for the whole team to follow.

A plan earns its keep when it decides what the business will not do.

1.

### On your strategy calls

We test your objectives the way a buyer would, sharpen your positioning and agree the few priorities that deserve your time this year.

2.

### Between calls

Toolkit 2 in your Stratworth Vault walks you through mission, objectives, positioning and a SWOT, so you arrive at each call with the thinking done.

3.

### As the plan develops

Advisory+ gives you two 60-minute calls each month and deeper valuation mapping, so you can see how strategic choices connect to what drives value.
